Alitalia cancels flights to and from Malpensa starting October 1st and Air transport strike schedule

Italy’s national airline Alitalia will no longer fly to or from Milan Malpensa airport from 1st October. The only Malpensa flights still operated by the Italian flag carrier, serving Rome Fiumicino, will be terminated after 30th September and, as far as is known at the moment, will not even be rerouted to Milan Linate.

It would be the first time since the inauguration of the airport in 1948 that the national airline would not operate flights from Malpensa. From October, those who want to reach Fiumicino from Milan will have to take off from Forlanini.

Among the European destinations remain active Paris, Brussels, London, and Amsterdam, which is served by Fiumicino and Linate, and only from the capital’s airport to Frankfurt, Munich, Geneva, Zurich, Nice, Marseille, Madrid, Málaga, Barcelona, ​​Athens, and Tirana.

A 24-hour nationwide air transportation strike is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, September 16th. The industrial action has been organized by several trade unions to denounce any further attempts to privatize the national civil aviation authority (ENAC). Personnel at airports throughout the country are expected to participate in the strike, although the likely impact on operations is currently unclear.

Air transport disruptions and delays should be anticipated.
