Hungary closes today its borders to foreigners

Updated: Dec 29, 2020

Hungary closes its borders today to foreigners in a bid to halt the spread of Covid-19, and travel restrictions to take effect starting September 1, and foreigners will only be allowed to enter Hungary “in the case that it is very necessary.”

This effectively means, that although Hungarian nationals may, of course, leave the country, they will be required to take two negative coronavirus tests, with 48 hours between the tests, or stay in compulsory home quarantine for 14 days.

Hungarians returning from abroad will have to quarantine for two weeks unless they can produce two negative tests – but some tourists from Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia will still be allowed in if they are not infected.

Exceptions to the entry ban will apply to military convoys and for humanitarian transit, as well as business or diplomatic travel.
